(Originally posted November 2006) – We’ve all seen the horrified looks on their faces. We’ve all witnessed them scratching their heads – wondering how to respond to us. The question they asked was simple, but our answer was not what they expected.
Them: “Where do your kids go to school?”
Us: “We homeschool our kids.”
I read the newspapers. I watch the evening news. The headlines scream ”American students rank far behind other countries” and “Eighth-grade teacher admits to romantic relationship with student” and “Four dead after school shooting.” Can someone please tell me why homeschoolers are the ones being defensive?
From now on, here’s how ALL homeschoolers should respond …
Us: “So you send your kids to public school?”
Them: “Why yes, we do.”
Us: “Oh my, how did you ever come to the conclusion that was the right decision?”
Them: “Well, it’s a great school.”
Us: “But what do you do about positive socialization? Isn’t it difficult for you to give them real-world experiences with real people?”
Them: “Huh?”
Us: “Wanna’ compare our children’s test scores?”
Them: “Gotta go …”

Ricky,
Might you be a homeschooler?! You rock if you are! Great blog page!
Take care,
Sue
We are indeed (all three of my kids were homeschooled). We have one in college now and another who just graduated high school. Our youngest is still homeschooled and will be a junior this coming school year.
Sue – I have a few other posts on here about homeschooling. Check out:
